 |
This 910-acre ranch along the northern foothills of the
Anderson Valley includes a total of 90 acres of vineyards. These
vineyards are in separate fenced areas allowing for wildlife such as mountain
lions and deer to migrate through and use the large areas of natural habitat
on the ranch. Over the past thirty years, Navarro Winery has re-planted
redwoods and Douglas fir throughout the property. Ted Bennett and
Deborah Cahn founded the winery in 1973. With a climate similar
to northern France, Navarro specializes in many of the same grape varieties. Ted
and Deborah's son and daughter are actively involved in the winery. The
hillside vineyards are managed with no-till practices to protect soils
and a creek revegetation project is underway. |

| Nelson and Sons Ranch and Vineyards - Hopland Valley, Mendocino County |
| This large 2,000-acre ranch includes 183 acres of
vineyard, as well as pear orchards and strawberry fields. Four generations
of the Nelson family have been farmers and have raised various crops
on the ranch. Tyler Nelson and his father Greg have planted oaks,
toyon and other native plants on their upland areas to protect soil and
increase wildlife habitats. As part of the Fish Friendly Farming program
and in conjunction with the Department of Fish and Game and US Department
of Agriculture, the Nelson's are planning an extensive revegetation project
on the creeks on their property. They have taken some of their
land out of production to provide for additional area to establish riparian
habitat. The large expanse of this ranch protects open space and
wildlife habitats where bear, mountain lion, deer, coyote and many other
animals are frequently observed. The Nelson's are starting a small
family winery - the Hopland Hills Winery. |
