Knight's Valley

To the east of Alexander Valley lies Knights Valley directly beneath Mount St. Helena. This small valley, with its surrounding mountains and creeks, drains into Maacama Creek and the Russian River. Although named after Thomas Knight—a short-term resident in 1853—Calvin Holmes is a better known early resident. Holmes and his family purchased the valley in 1861, developed the town of Kellogg and built a large Victorian home that still stands. Ida Clayton Road was the original route from Knights Valley to the quicksilver mines in Lake County and where the notorious Black Bart robbed the stage for the mine payroll. Today Knights Valley supports winegrapes as well as cattle ranching. Tributary creeks in Knights Valley include: Bidwell, Kellogg/Redwood, McDonnell, and Briggs creeks.
